Day trip from Fes to Meknes and Volubilis – overview:

Volubilis is one of the oldest historical ruins in Morocco. So this day trip from Fes offers an opportunity to go back in time to wander these fascinating Roman remains. It is set over a huge area with ancient streets, pillars and mosaics clearly visible; the mind’s eye can easily reconstruct this ancient metropolis.

Overlooking this valley lies the holy city of Moulay Edriss Zerhouni with its beautiful main square.

The day trip from Fes also offers you the opportunity of visiting another of Morocco’s four imperial cities – Meknes. Here you can add to the photo album of your Moroccan holiday by photographing its massive walls and the Bab Mansour gate. The disused granaries, the royal stables and the Royal Palace are also significant parts of Meknes’ heritage.

The programme for the Fes to Meknes and Volubilis day trip:

After being fetched from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, you set out through the wonderful scenery of the surrounding countryside of rolling hills and market farms. About an hour later, you arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Roman ruins of Volubilis.

Volubilis, the ancient Roman city, is spread over a wide area, offering beautiful views over the valleys, the hills, and the green fields. Here, it is recommended to hire a local guide to provide deeper knowledge of the main buildings, mosaics, housing and history of the site.

From here, you can see and then visit the holy town of Moulay Edriss Zerhouni, perched on the hillside above the ruins. Even though non-Moslems are not allowed to enter the mausoleum, the main square is full of lovely little shops and offer beautiful views. This is where lunch is scheduled.

Afterwards, our Fes day trip continues to Meknes, where you can photograph Meknes’ historical architecture with its massive walls and fascinating gates. You can also visit the Dal El Makhzen Royal Palace, the Tomb of Moulay Ismail as well as various souks throughout the city.  Meknes’ souks offer just as many leather and silver goods as Fes, but at more affordable prices.

In the afternoon, you drive back to Fes and your day trip comes to an end when your driver escorts you to your riad.
