Trekking in the Atlas Mountains – itinerary

1st day: Ouarzazate – Dades Gorges

Your day begins with a morning departure at 8.30 towards the Dades Gorges, passing through the picturesque Oasis of Skoura. Here, a cluster of crumbling kasbahs stands amidst the palm trees, a poignant reminder of how drought and limited resources have compelled many locals to leave their homes in search of work in the cities.

The journey includes a visit to the beautifully restored Kasbah Amredhil, an architectural gem that offers a glimpse into Morocco’s rich history. From here, the route winds through Kel’aa M’gouna, the famous Valley of Roses. During April and May, roses are harvested and transformed into creams, oils, rose water, soaps, or dried flowers. These products, often found in medinas across the country, are of the finest quality here where they are grown.

The drive then takes you along a scenic and winding road through dramatic rocky landscapes, eventually descending to a cool, lush river valley. As the greenery fades, you enter a stark, barren region where little can grow. Even in this harsh environment, Berber nomads live in caves, and their hospitality often includes offering you a glass of tea—an intimate glimpse into a way of life unfamiliar to many Moroccans from urban areas.

Lunch is enjoyed in the Dades Gorges, giving you ample time to explore the surroundings. Whether walking through the gorges, wandering in the fields, or admiring the gardens, this is a chance to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the valley. Your day concludes with an overnight stay in a charming hotel or riad nestled somewhere in the valley.

2nd, 3rd, 4th day: Atlas Mountain trekking:

After breakfast, you will set out to explore the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains and the surrounding area of Dades Gorges over three days and three nights. Each day offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and cultural richness of this remarkable region.

The pace and duration of the trek can be adjusted to suit your preferences, providing plenty of flexibility to pause whenever you wish to admire the scenery or take a rest. You will also have the option to ride the mules that accompany you, carrying essential equipment such as blankets, mattresses, kitchen supplies, and personal belongings.

As you traverse the southern slopes of the Atlas Mountains, you will encounter a tapestry of landscapes, from rugged cliffs to fertile valleys dotted with traditional Berber villages. These communities are nestled in the heart of the mountains, offering a glimpse into a way of life that has remained unchanged for generations. The views of terraced fields, ancient pathways, and dramatic peaks create a truly captivating backdrop for your journey.

Our local guide and muleteers will highlight the unique features of the terrain and share fascinating insights into the lives of the Berber people who inhabit these remote areas. The team will also take care of preparing meals and setting up camps, ensuring your experience is as comfortable as it is memorable.

One night might be spent with a welcoming Berber family, where you can enjoy their warm hospitality, while another could take you higher into the mountains, sleeping in caves alongside nomadic goat herders. Each night provides a distinctive and enriching experience, deepening your connection with the region and its people.

5th day: Dades Gorges – Merzouga:

After breakfast, you descend once more into the valley and travel a short distance to Tinghir, where you’ll encounter the remarkable Toudgha Gorges, located just north of the town. A gentle walk allows you to admire the towering walls of the gorge, their sheer faces rising dramatically on either side, while the narrow expanse of sky above adds to the grandeur of the scene. The area’s tranquil atmosphere and stunning geology make it a captivating stop on your journey.

Your route to the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes takes you through Tinjdad and the verdant Oasis of Tafilalet near Erfoud, renowned for its annual Date Festival. Continuing through Rissani, the historical seat of the Alaouite dynasty of Morocco’s present king, you’ll pass through landscapes rich in cultural and historical significance.

Between Tinjdad and Erfoud, the ingenious underground water channels, known as “khettarat”, form a testament to the region’s engineering heritage. These subterranean channels, designed to combat evaporation, provided a vital water supply for centuries. Stepping into these now-disused tunnels, you can feel the cool air and gain an appreciation for the innovative techniques used to conserve precious water in this arid environment.

As you arrive at the luxury desert camp, a refreshing glass of tea awaits, offering a warm welcome after your journey. Later, a camel ride takes you into the dunes, where the sight of the setting sun casting golden hues over the sands creates an unforgettable moment.

Your luxury camp provides exceptional comfort, featuring private bathrooms, king-sized beds, and exquisite Moroccan furnishings. Lanterns are thoughtfully arranged to illuminate the serene surroundings, enhancing your experience of the stillness and beauty of the desert night.

6th day: Full-day trekking in Merzouga:

The trek begins with a three-hour journey by dromedary across the serene expanse of the Sahara Desert. You have the option to ride camels or walk alongside them, allowing you to choose the pace and experience that suits you best. Other camels accompany the group, carrying everything required to prepare a delicious lunch, which is freshly cooked amidst the dunes by your skilled camel-men, adding a touch of authenticity to the adventure.

As you traverse the southern slopes of Merzouga, you’ll be captivated by the striking landscapes, where golden sand dunes merge with rugged terrains dotted with hardy vegetation. The area is home to semi-nomadic communities whose simple, resourceful way of life reflects their deep connection to this challenging environment. Their stories, traditions, and resilience offer a unique glimpse into a lifestyle shaped by the rhythms of the desert.

In the afternoon, another three-hour trek brings you to the summit of the Erg Chebbi dunes, towering 250 metres above the desert floor. The views from this vantage point are awe-inspiring, particularly as the setting sun bathes the dunes in hues of gold and crimson, creating a moment of pure serenity.

As night falls, a hearty dinner is served, followed by an enchanting evening of nomadic music under a star-filled sky. Your night is spent in traditional nomad tents nestled among the dunes, where the tranquillity of the desert wraps you in its timeless embrace.

7th day: Merzouga – Ouarzazate

If you rise early, you’ll witness the desert at its most enchanting as the sun paints the dunes in a symphony of colours and shadows, creating a spectacle unlike any other. This tranquil moment offers you time to wander among the sands, soaking in the serenity and magic of the Sahara before the day unfolds.

Back at the camp, breakfast is served, setting you up for the journey ahead to the Dra’a Valley. Along the way, you pass through the village of Tazzarine, which gained fame as a location in the film Babel. A stop in N’Qob provides a delightful lunch, allowing you to savour local flavours while enjoying the scenic surroundings.

The route continues towards Tansikht, where you cross the Dra’a River and join the ancient caravan trail that once bustled with traders. A brief pause for tea or coffee adds a moment of relaxation before you venture off-road to explore the oases. Here, you’ll find towering palm groves and historic villages that offer a glimpse into traditional life in this arid yet vibrant region. Nearby, be sure to marvel at the fascinating dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock—a unique reminder of the area’s prehistoric past.

At Agdz, perched at the head of the Dra’a Valley, you have the chance to visit Kasbah Tamnougalt, the valley’s oldest fortress, where 13 families continue to live within its timeworn walls. The road back to Ouarzazate ascends the Tizi-n-Tinfifte mountain pass, offering breathtaking views of dramatic rock formations at an elevation of 1,660 metres. By the time you arrive in Ouarzazate, around 18:00, the journey will have left you with lasting memories of the mesmerising landscapes and rich history of this remarkable region.
